BUILD*lab develops site-specific, participatory scenographic installations that invite people to imagine alternative uses for public spaces. Projects are co-created, and the act of building becomes an artistic performance. We developed the project Ha[c]ken (from haken: hook, and hacken: to hack) in Berlin in partnership with local initiatives engaged in inclusion and accessibility to infrastructure and knowledge.

The project originated from the observation that there was a lack of spaces where young women could gather in public. Sports fields are often monopolized by groups of boys, terraces are places where one must consume in order to sit, and parks, outside of summer, are cold and damp.

We organized a month-long workshop with young girls from the Moabit neighborhood to better understand their needs. Together, we tested different possibilities for temporary installations. The aim was to occasionally transform the way sports fields are used. Could these spaces be shared and converted into comfortable places to sit, share secrets, relax with friends, or dance out of sight?

The project led to the creation of a set of modular, transformable urban furniture that can be adapted according to users’ wishes. It is made from materials sourced from the construction industry, repurposed to make them comfortable. The set is stored in a space near the sports field and can be installed in just a few minutes by those who wish to use it.

Project developed for Moabit by collective B.U.I.L.D*lab (Carmen Carolina Staiano and Mathilde Dewavrin). Project funded by Kulturelle-Bildung Fond Berlin.
